Welcome

Wanga Mukulu Kingdom
Shimuli Shrines, Mumias

The Wanga Mukulu Kingdom, often referred to as the Upper Wanga Kingdom, represents one of the most enduring yet less documented strands of Wanga history in western Kenya. Today, its presence is symbolically anchored at sacred and administrative spaces such as Shimuli Shrines, located within the modern agricultural landscape of Mumias. Beneath the sugarcane fields and contemporary infrastructure lies a deeper historical terrain shaped by ritual authority, lineage, and sacred kingship. At the centre of this continuity stands Nabongo Maurice Rapando Wambani, the reigning monarch who embodies a lineage that has survived through memory, oral tradition, and spiritual legitimacy rather than colonial documentation.

Why we exist

Why We Exist – Wanga Mukulu Kingdom

The Wanga Mukulu Kingdom exists to preserve and promote the cultural heritage, traditions, and identity of the Wanga people. Rooted in sacred kingship and ancestral lineage, the kingdom serves as a living link between the past and present, ensuring that history, values, and indigenous knowledge are not lost over time.

We exist to safeguard sacred sites, uphold ritual practices, and maintain the spiritual and cultural foundations that define our community. Through this role, the kingdom protects the integrity of its traditions while fostering unity and a shared sense of belonging among its people.

At the same time, the Wanga Mukulu Kingdom seeks to remain relevant in the modern world by engaging with contemporary society, promoting cultural awareness, and supporting the transmission of knowledge to future generations.
